Finally, got all my NWSL parts together for my gear box conversion on my Bowser H-9. I have assembled everything and installed into the frame. I set up the frame on a stand to test for binding or other problems and break in. I found the "other problem", when testing the assembly about 10 min in the worm gear shaft becomes hot, very hot and causes the reciever cup to melt and fail. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

After I made this post I took gearbox apart and found some brass flakes floating around in the grease/oil. I know this is not good. Closer examination reveals scoring on the worm gear shaft, who knows what's in the bushing. Question now being would It be wise to replace the whole gearbox or just clean it out? I'm leaning towards replacing it. Let me know if you share the same thoughts.

Yesterday I attended our monthly NMRA-BR division meet in Plymouth, all very pleasant.

During our meets, we set up a modular layout , based on the specs of RS Tower and NMRA-BR. Depending on availability the layout varies a bit each month, but yesterday the layout was made up out of:
Mike Ruby's 11th Avenue module
Our club's Lipson Junction crossing module
Peter Lloyd-Jones' Lloyd Yard.
Pete Saunders' Rocklin
and a storage yard called 'Western Yard' (which is one half the of the storage from our old oval shaped layout 'Anson' ).

Yesterday I operated a train headed by two SP GP9's, originating from Western Yard, with approx 9 cars. It ran via the crossing to 11th Avenue, dropped off 4 cars, and picked up 4 others, then back via Lipson Junction towards Lloyd yard, set out 3 cars, pick up 3, onwards then via the Junction and cross over to Rocklin, also here 4 cars were set out, and 4 picked up, and finally back to Western Yard.
We operate with prototypical speeds, and under dispatcher control, so clearance had to be requested in order to travel to the next destination. This results in the above sequence taking approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Here is a very short video made of some traffic at Lipson Junction. The turnouts and signals here are under dispatcher control with the aid of JMRI running on a laptop and connected to the DCC system. (you can see the dispatcher Peter LJ in the background behind his desk, somewhat hidden by the depot building).

As a newbie to American Rail Roading, can someone explain what the differences are between the various categories of railroads, (i.e. Class1, Branchline, Shortline, etc) thanks.

WPMA-40 is a seven days a week job the switches the piers and RailPort, its sign on times varies. WPMA-40 is one job that still uses a caboose on a daily basis as it normally shoves its cars to the piers. Got a couple shots of 40 as it was departing Mannheim Yard.

Hi. A New Year often means a new layout for me for 2014 I've decided to definately build a New England layout.

My last layout CSX Transflo,NY was a bit of a compromise. It started off as a UK themed layout and then,unable to resist the lure of US model railroading, I 'converted' the layout locating it in upstate New York.

As I mentioned in my last thread, I'd vacationed in New England in 1993 and 1994 and had always wanted to build a layout based there.

Using my usual footprint of 9ft x 15ins, I decided on another simple plan. Just 2 industries. I wanted a warehouse that could take 3 boxcars ( paper products) and a grain (feed) unloading facility.

I included a siding (run-around) as I prefer to watch the loco leading and this arrangement allows incoming cars to be left on the siding while the industry spurs are switched out.

Of course, the layout can be operated 'Inglenook' style with the loco shoving cars. Here's the plan

The inspiration for the location of the layout came from watching videos of small branch operations in New England. A small branch runs fron Portland ME to a paper mill at Westbrook ME.
The traffic nowadays appears to be only Kaolin (clay)

I am looking for an AHM gp18 frame with intact hand rails. I have a GP18 but the frame and hand rails are junk. Is there one out there for sale? It does not need to run.
