I started another cardboard project. This will be the Dothan depot. The real one looks like this:


I started by cutting out the basic shape, noting that half of the depot is two-story and half is not. I made the "core" as kind of an L-shape, and then made the lower roofline to wrap around the entire building and an upper roof on top.

Robin was famous for his cerealboard. I have "silkboard", a product of the container that holds two Silk (soy milk) cartons that are a necessity for lactose-intolerant family members. Parables about purses and sow's ears come to mind.

Here is the other side after I added the lower roof and started on the bay window section trackside.

Here's what it looks like this evening. I added the windows and doors and patched some gaps with lightweight spackle. I did make one pretty obvious error, that being I made the pitch of the roof to shallow. In the real one, the roof over the single-story part is much steeper. Oh well.


Will take a break for now, so I can figure out how to do the roof tiles.

The removable segment at the balcony door and at the main door of my room have a problem with the track transition.
The tracks are based on wood and cork. At the end are two brass screws at each end and the rails are soldered to them and then cut. That results in a well adjusted transition at the segment ends.


The problem appears after some month or years. The wood and cork shrinks and the track sinks down but the brass screws keep their level stable. That results in "ski jump". I get a nasty click noise if the track is straight but 6 axis engines are likely to derail if the jump is in a curve.
I know other techniques to do segment transitions but the brass screw method is often used, simple to do and well documented but nobody reports problems similar to my ski jump problem.

I just noticed this feature this morning. I tried it in the Hobo campfire and nothing happened. Probably not a big deal but just thought I'd mention it.

I'm looking for a prototype for new modules for my module group.

My choice would the industrial track between Armitage Ave in the north, N Mannheim Rd in the east, Anson Dr in the west and James Pl in Melrose Park,IL.

At Google Earth look at 41°54'37"N and 87°53'14" W

I found a lot of informations using Google, Google Earth, Street view and Bing maps.

But for a good model there are never enough pics. Mainly because I'm living in Germany and there is no chance for a visit.

Is here is this forum some one who lives near this place and who can take some pics for me ?

A while back someone posted a youtube video of a love story on a model railroad. I thought it was fantastic. It may have been a contest entry. Dose anyone remember this and where to find it?

As reported in the Ventura County STAR and TrainOrders, the Ventura County Transportation Commission plans to terminate its lease with the privately owned Fillmore & Western Railway on December 1.

That action would prevent the railroad from using the Santa Paula branch line owned by the County. The branch is the former Southern Pacific route that at one time operated between Montalvo and Saugus.

If you are interested in riding on the Fillmore & Western before the lease is terminated, the National Narrow Gauge Convention Committee has extra space on their planned tour later this month. You DO NOT have to be registered for the Convention to take this trip.

The cost is:

Adults……….…$65.00 per adult
Child 4 to 12… $55.00
Child 2 to 3……$35.00

These prices include charter bus service from Pasadena, lunch, a train ride from Fillmore to Santa Paula and back, and a tour of the facilities. The trip is scheduled to depart mid-morning and return at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, August 28.

Allow time to park. Self parking at the Hilton is $18.00. According to Pete Steinmetz’s website there is a parking structure one block north of the hotel in the Paseo Colorado Shopping Center at Green Street (see map on link above). The rate is $9.00 maximum per 24 hours. No attendant is on duty. People must pay at a machine that takes credit cards or cash. It will only accept bills $20.00 and below.
