Need Help with my track plan
Posted by: KentBy - 12-26-2008, 10:10 PM - Forum: Layouts - Replies (5)

I started this tread on Zealot, but I am restarting it here.

http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=164472

The 'table_diagram' is draw on 2 ft squares and I used 24" main line curves. My plan is to stay less then 2% grades. This an HO layout and it is my second RR. The first one was over 30 years ago and was 8X4 ft sheet of plywood.
1
The bench work goes around the wall in a U shape and then connects to the island in the middle of the room. You can walk around the island and between the table along the wall and the island. The island is 7 inches higher than the bench work along the wall.
2
The island will have a mountain in the middle do the double main line enters the mountain by one large tunnel and out the other side by two smaller tunnel exits. Track continues to elevate enough to cross back over the line entering the island and then drops back to match the other side of the double main line and the back down the hill.
3
I have drawn a few freight business along the main line.

The wall picture is a show my latest plan. Assuming the North is up in this picture the West bound train will be on the inside main line track. It can enter the freight yard on the left side or go around by staying next to the East bound main line. If it is a passenger train it can enter the passenger yard on the top left side of the picture. There will be two passenger loading tracks and a third track to allow the engine to escape and back up to the main line. To get service it will then need to move forward and then back into the freight yard, and then into the service area with the turntable.
After the last turnout at the top the track will drop so that it can go under the yard track and then back up to be at the same elevation as the other main line by the time it reaches the island.

With the current design the grade from there to the island will need to be about 3.5 %. Is this to much? Should I lower the island some?

 Tinkering with 2 small layouts
Posted by: RobertInOntario - 12-26-2008, 07:16 PM - Forum: Layouts - Replies (16)

I have two small layouts on the go right now and was able to get ahead with some scenery the past two days. I did some additional ballasting on my larger layout, a 4x6 HO one. I also have a 3x4 layout that is actually HO! and I had my two young sons helping me. We did some ground scatter and painted on a road (onto a section where we had put some wall filler). I've posted pics and descriptions of these on another forum and may do so here. One day I might join these two layouts together.

My sons are ages 5 & 8 so it can be a little busy and hectic when they help! but it's great fun!

 Quick weathering
Posted by: MLW - 12-26-2008, 12:33 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - Replies (10)

This is my quick "how-to" to weathering.

Hopefully you may find this somewhat helpfull.

Quote:This is my method of quick and easy weathering. I find it harder to explain what i do, then to actually do it!
The key is to practice until the desire effect is achieve. In my own experience I have found that
“heavy weathering” was easier to do then subtle one. Your best bet is too take it slow, use reference
pictures from the real thing and don’t go overboard. Your skills will get much better with practice so
don’t be discouraged. There’s lot of information “out there” and some specialized forum such has
Model trains Weathered (http://www.modeltrainsweathered.com) to help you out. Be warned that
weathering is quite addictive. Most of the following can be found on my website.

Below I explain (or try to!) the following:

* The 5 minute weathering method
* Paint-Brush and Sponge method
* The Paint-Brush-Only method

Tools of the trade:

- Paint brush. From tiny to 1 ½ inches wide
- Cosmetic sponges
- Q-Tips
- Paper-towels
- A plastic lid, piece of cardboard, whatever will permit you to mix paint
to create the color needed.
- Reference picture

- Various water based and oil based paint (Burnt sienna, Raw Umber, Sand, Beige,
building brown, Dove Grey, Black, White, Leather)
- Rubbing alcohol: To diluted the paint. Water works well too.
- Weathering powder (Black, grey, rust)

Good Luck

 The Christmas haul
Posted by: iis612 - 12-25-2008, 06:48 PM - Forum: Lower Berth - Replies (22)

Sorry, no time for pics. For the most part, everything I received was utilitarian in nature. However, before I get into the material part of the holiday, I spent the day watching my kids open gifts and play with their toys. We all spent the day together, enjoying each others company. It was a great Christmas.
Alright, now for the meat...
I got 2 rubbermaid drawer sets
some pastel chalks
a variety of wood dowels
a new xacto knife set
a magnifying visor
an assortment of adhesives.

The other gift has not arrived yet, as it was ordered last minute, the Bowser Light Pacific kit.

The best gift I could have received was to spend a nice day with my family. I hope everyone else got what they wanted.

Hope you're having a Merry Christmas, y'all.
My beautiful wife and I are going to the Greenberg Model Railroad show in Chantilly, Va., Saturday, the 27th of this month. (This weekend, to be exact.)
If any one out there will be attending, we would love to meet you. I won't be hard to identify, I have a full beard and moustache, and long hair. I'll also be wearing an engineer's cap. My wife will be the most beautiful lady there. She's about 5'8" and is a brunette, with blue eyes and the most beautiful smile you'll ever see. Thumbsup

 New Air brush.
Posted by: Lester Perry - 12-25-2008, 09:36 AM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - Replies (3)

I recieved a real air brush for Christmas. I don't have it in front of me right now so I can't gove you exact details of what it is, but I can tell you it is top of the line Badger, dual action. What I am looking for is lessons, on line or in book form so that I get off to the right start. I have had cheap ones that were junk but this one is the real thing. I mean profetional (spell check) stuff. The last thing I want to do is mess up a good new tool.

I cant get an avatar that works. I used paint, and made a picture so small I cant see what it is, saved it, and I still get the too large message, I tried loading it from photobucket, and that wont work either. What do I need to do to get it smaller?

I have a Walthers HO scale 16 wheel depressed center flat, that I had nothing to haul on.
One day, I was staring at some empty printer cartridges sitting on my desk, when the lightbulb came on.

I could make something out of them and use it as a load. They came from my Epson All-In -One Printer.
