I'm actully in the process of making a timetable for my layout.

While reading old CN employees timetable, I see alphabetical code next to station names. Often it is "Y", "CKW", "Z", "P". What do they means? I know it is related to what was there.

From my knowledge about the Subdivision, I guess "Y" is related to a wye, "Z" to a passenger station and "P" probably to a platform. This is only educated guess. Unfortunately, I didn't find any legend in the timetable that could help me understand what these symbols mean.

I'm looking to paint and decal 4 or 5 boxcars but I don't want them all to be the same color red. I've used pollyscale mineral red which I'll use again but was wondering what colors are close to mineral red without looking exactly the same. I've thought about oxide red or roof red but not sure if those are more brown than red. Also what color do others use for the roof of a boxcar when it's not painted the same body color, silver or a tin color?

And since I had mentioned decaling them what set is just plain white letter and numbers, not stenciled or a roman or gothic style.

Looking for information on a color match for the red used by the EBT on their boxcars. Paints suggested by my F&C kit are no longer available. Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, since I started this mess I figured I better get my plan figured out.

I made a few agreements with myself before starting this project.
First: It will be designed to be placed into a module or other layout in the near future. (i like the Diorama size, but do not see the point in just building a static display)
Second: I want to focus on getting the basic parts done by December 1st, if I can continue to super detail it I will, but first thing first is the basics.
Third: I want to use as much material as I already have on hand and not to make a bunch of purchases to complete the project.

With that criteria in mind I decided to model the Tum-a-lum Lumber Company in Redmond Oregon. Tum-a-lum has been in the building supply industry since 1906 and at one time had a number of locations around Oregon. In my modeled era of 1968 Tum-a-lum the location along the track was used as a location to receive materials and store materials that do not fit in their retail store. Along with their standard building materials they also had a coal yard and made coal deliveries in the area. Although not as common as wood or oil, coal was still used to heat homes in the area or Eastern Oregon.

With that in mind I will be able to model a small piece of track along with a warehouse to receive goods and an area for them to unload coal next to the track. I would be able to have 40' boxcar on spot and a 40' gondola also spotted for unloading.



Not much to look at, I will keep things up to date and start posting pictures once I start building.

I am a UK modeller, and I am really struggling to find detailed information on operational practice for rail-served corn syrup industries? I know Lance Mindheim has made some references to them in his books, but I was hoping for something that went into a bit more depth? If anyone can help me out then that would be fantastic, thank you very much in advance!

I've been officially retired for a year now ......seems a little strange , not working . Not that I punched a clock , but I do ...oops , did like work and wasn't a guy to take much time off . But I'll be 70 in a couple of months so I guess that's long enough . Retirement isn't quite what I had envisioned as I had thoughts of being in Scottsdale AZ in the winter .........but as much as I bitch about winter when it's here , our area of southern Ontario gets off pretty easy and I confess Ido look forward to changes in season . We hadn't counted on health issues , particularly with my wife , so travel is out of the picture .....I'm essentially a care giver and have been for several years . My wife is not an invalid or incapacitated but she does not handle being alone for more than 4 or 5 hours and has become a home body of sorts . It is what it is !

I do like puttering around the house on my own time ....if I don't feel like cutting the lawn , to hell with it until tomorrow etc . I have been totally remiss with my small layout ....just haven't been in the mood but I still like the hobby in general ....but no more clubs .

Well , enough rambling , how do you like retirement ??

Hi, I'm actually thinking about modelling a few BAOX tank cars for the layout. Most went to CGTX when B-A went down and kept their paint scheme. A few lasted well into the 80s.

I'm using the Black Cat set. They say the top half of the tank should be painted dark green "from color photo evidences". Well. I did my homework, found a few not so neat 1950s color pictures of BAOX tank cars and it looks plain black to me (even the car with the light color middle stripe). Anybody here have more factual information about old BAOX cars? Also, Black Cat say the light color stripe is yellow-orange, but it's hard to tell. It looks more like a creamy yellow.

Here's the best picture out there I could find. No trace of dark green on the tank.



This one is B&W, but there's no color differenciation between top and bottom.

Hello all,

My plan is to build a scene in a 16 x 16(unless I can find a bigger box) inch pizza box. The scene will be built around 2 On30 boxcars from the Hayseed & Hicksville narrow gauge railroad I dreamed up awhile back. Keeping with the railroads rural nature it will be a siding with an unloading ramp/platform close to a small farmers market and a hillbilly village based on a HO punch out hillbilly village book from way back. The structures will be scratch built in O'ish scale from scraps of wood and or card stock some of the structures will be low relief or even in some cases forced perspective. I hope to have at least a station, a house and a barn with sagging roof. I if I can I will include a jug band and other rural figures. I intend to use the lid of the box as a backdrop. If all goes well it will look like a holler.

If I complete this project early, may try another smallish scene.
