Now we have arrived at the fun part operation.

Operation is a modeler's preference so,I will share my thoughts.

Once I finish my layout and start operations here's my plans.

The "day" will start with the 3 man crew arriving for work..While the engineer fires up the locomotive the conductor and brakeman will look over today's work.

First we see we have a "light" day all we have orders for is the 8 covered hoppers on the interchange track and take 'em to Landstar and pick up the 5 loads and return them to CSX interchange.

Another scenario calls for switching Blum's Lumber,Honey Creek Meats,C.W. Zimmer Manufacturing,General American Knitting,Mid States Distribution and Buckeye potato Chips and Frank's Scrap Iron.

We will run light to the interchange and pick up the inbound and return to the yard and switch the cars in working order as per the switch list.When We return to the yard we will take the outbound cars to CSX /NS or both.Looks like a 12 hour day.

Some days we will depart the yard light and pick up 2-5 cars..Other days we may have deliver 1 or 2 cars.

As you can see I am going to use different operation scenarios so it won't become routine and boring.

My beautiful wife and I went to a train show, yesterday, in Bluefield, VA. Of course, even though the Dubuque, Davenport, and St.Louis railroad doesn't need any more rolling stock, Well....you all know how it is.....

Seems a simple question, it perhaps is, but let me explain:

I'm looking for a model railroad magazine, that is aimed at the average to more experienced model railroader. It should feature loads of how to's, on any subject related to the hobby, be it weathering, scenery building, tracklaying, locomotive re-motoring and upgrades, DCC etc etc etc
I'm not sensitive to it being glossy or not, nor do I care which magazine is the biggest, those issues are totally irrelavant to me, I am looking for a quality periodical, one that I will keep and read back in past issues time and time again.

Which one is it? (please also bear in mind that it should be in the english language, and can get a subscription even when living in the UK)

Quick question.

What (in anyone's opinion) would be a good width of dimensional scale lumber for one to use for pier decking that could "realistically" support rolling stock and locomotives?

The dimensional thickness actually doesn't really matter as the model I'll be building will use 1/8" craft plywood for its base and the thickness will not be seen once the model is completed. I was thinking of something like an * x 12 or maybe a * x 16. With " * " being the dimensional thickness. I guess a width that looks soild and sturdy with out looking too over sized is what I'm looking for here. I was thinking something with a width of 12" will be sufficient as the truss bridge I am also building has chords of wood that are 10 x 12".

I might experiment a bit here and build a couple of mock-ups with some track and put a loco or car on top to see how it looks, but was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion or idea as to what to start with.

This is one of those instances where I wish I could mill my own scale lumber but I do not think I have the tools to make consistent or accurate cuts unless someone has suggestions on how to use a 12" table saw to make small pieces of timber? But that seems like it would just make more saw dust then actual timber. Plus...its seems kinda dangerous hock:
(Perhaps it could be done with some care and a thin kerf blade? I dunno?)


Now I'm rambling...any thoughts?

Lots and lots of nice pics from the prototype, nice for a bit of rail fanning, or if you're looking for details of specific types of loco's or rolling stock etc, when trying to add details to an engine as prototypical as possible.
