I remember someone mentioning this idea in one of my posts. I was working with
some 28mm Roman figures and realized this was a nice size. The figure guys call
them 1/56. I started thinking.

The Bachmann On30 cars measure out better in 1/55 than they do in 1/48. The HO
code 83 track looks better, still slightly undersize ties but works.

The plastic Roman and Celts can be "modernized for the 1890's. The metal figures
are typically wargame "dwarfish". There are 28mm wagons available from Dixon
and others.





and there is later equipment like cars and trucks, more than in 1/48





The Mantua HO ten-wheeler becomes a viable narrow gauge loco in 1/55. You cannot
make real three foot 1/48 locos from HO locos.


The dreadfully undersized for 1/48 Bachmann 4-4-0 with a 1/55 roman:



Now it gives me a correct narrow gauge 3 foot 4-4-0 .

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Korber Model 'Gen Lt and Pw." structure that sells for around $125? I see it listed in the Walthers catalog but don't know anyone who has built or even seen this structure. Basically I am wondering is the quality of the product worth the price! Thanks

I have a MRC Tech 4 220, a mixed lot of HO buildings, and cars, and two sets of Walthers Gold Line Trinity RD4 Coal Hoppers on Ebay. Low reserves on all.

I have some scraps off foam rubber left over from recovering the seats in my car. Before I chuck them, I thought I would consider making my own ground foam. I have read about people doing it so I know it works, but what I really want to know is if it is worth the effort.

My layout is small (4x8) and will have semi-desert scenery. Plus, much of the layout will be taken up town/industry. I would estimate that i would only need about 3-4 bags of WS ground foam for the whole layout. Obviously, making my own ground foam wouldn't save me much money.

Are there any other advantages to making your own ground foam besides cost savings? Does it look better?

Now let's chose industries.

In choosing industries I highly recommend that the traffic to and from these industries leave and enter through interchange instead of being connected.

The type of industries we model should reflect the area we model.If we model(say) the Northwest then we should carry lots of lumber.If we model (say) a industrial area we should have boxcars,lumber cars,coil cars,tank cars etc.If we model the grain belt we should be heavy in grain hoppers.

Let's take a closer look.

In choosing industries we need to consider the era we model.By doing this you can add several different types of industries to include shoe manufacturers,tanneries,small power plants used for local industry complex and other such industries.

In compiling your list of possible industries we can use several research methods,books from the library on local history,the internet and my favorite driving through the area we plan to model-we can also take notes on local industries,names of rivers,creeks,connecting railroads etc.Be sure to take lots of photos.

Is bigger better?

I think so..I fully believe 5 or 6 large industries beats 20 small industries that is drawf by a 40' boxcar.Unlike small industrie the larger industries can have more then one spot or can use more then one type of car.

We can have our largest industry along the back drop and still have more then one spot and (say) a unloading area for cover hoppers or tank cars.

Remember.. "The more spots you have at a industry the more switching value you get in return." Sorry,I long forgot who said that but,I remember that line.

So,let's hear your thoughts and if you wish you can add your list of industries-I am still working on my list beyond Land Star Grains.

I am in the final stages of buying a house in Colorado to retire in! I'll be leaving Las Vegas to live there about april or May. The best thing is I have a basement I can use for a layout. Take a look!

It even has a a shelf or two!! The Basement is about 20 X30.

My Free lanced railroad story has been in development for a while and it also has some other fictional roads and other railroading entities that it will interact with. Unfortunately the BFT only has a botched up paint job on a gondola so far

The BFT Buckeye Freight & Terminal is more of a coal hauler based in South and Southeast Ohio and Eastern Kentucky. Along with the BFT are KCCC Kentucky coal & container Corp mostly unit trains of coal and old battered flats with containers for loads. An occasional Michigan Saginaw Union leasing car and rare loco will make an appearance on the BFT tracks. And then NERDS equipment makes a regular rounds of the line. Nerds(North Eastern Rail Department of Standards)

I have even thought of a few places names(fictional) HoggWeed, ORV jt. (Ohio river valley junction), possum holler, deerfoot crossing, coon creek. Green Frog Bog (a bar)

I need to come up with a back story and history of the rail road, so far all I have is a few names and vague idea of the type of scenery/setting I have in mind for the next layout as the current layout I am building is strictly a toy oriented layout featuring lionel and flyer hirail trains.

is there any one that is into collecting cut class or know of some where to obtain info on them ?
