So I still am building the benchwork on my new layout and the trackplan is figured out, but the industry isnt finalized yet. I have a large area that I had planned on building around my Glacier Gravel Co. building I had on a previous layout. This is a Waltheres cornerstone series kit if anybody isnt familiar. But what Im starting to think about, is I have never seen a gravel pit and so I wouldnt know exactly how to model it. I also really dont know of any large gravel operations like this anywhere around here. Does anybody have any other ideas for a similar sized industry that would see open hoppers that could be found in the midwest?

I know a few of you fine gents have some neat and interesting ways to make tar paper roofs for our models. I was wondering if some of you would mind sharing your techniques here? One of my personal faves was the use of tissue paper applied with diluted glue and dyed with India ink I think it was or something like that?

I would be cool to have the various techniques all buttoned up into one thread.

To be honest, the stuff I've got is incomplete and ugly. No way around it.

that said, I've finally got the parts i need to build some realistic catenary. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to build a jig, but once that is out of the way, I'm going to attempt to put up a nicer system. I have several feet (in three foot lengths) of H-column of various prototypical sizes.

Hopefully, i'll be able to just take my time. I rushed myself with that contest, so now i think i should try building something better to complete my layout.

Here is a brain dumping of my generic knowledge of how a PRR catenary pole set goes together. I thought about making diagrams of the basic kinds, but in reality, there are SO many different styles of catenary. Some areas used H-column, some use circular metal poles, other lattice structures, and out west there was even some wooden PRR catenary poles. They all have different kinds of arms and things attached to them, and different hangar versions.

For simplicity, for now i have posted a diagram i have made of a generic catenary pole with cross wire, and a K-braced one. The poles, no matter how they vary, rougly follow the same patterns.

Feel free to ask questions if i missed something.

I've bought streamlined passenger cars by Athearn. They are in the California Zephyr colors. Here's what the coach looks like: http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default....D=ATH79065

I'm re-lettering and renumbering them for a short Santa Fe train in the 1950's. Is there a way without repainting the whole cars? Partial repainting is fine with me. I also have decal papers for regular inkjet printers, but I don't think my printer can make a "silver" color since it is just an ordinary printer(or is it possible?).

Hello just a quick question emd's ft units were 1st generation correct? if not ????? and thier f3's also the same generation? Thanks for the help as the wife and i are doing sound for the locomotives.
