I have a July 1980 Railroad Model Craftsman, and an April 1999 Model Railroader. Don't ask why I still have them. They are of no use to me, but if they are to anyone else, you got 'em and I'll stick them in the mail. 4 days until I trash them.

I'm just curious: why are cab units preferred for passenger service when it comes to diesels? Is it just because of the appearance fits nicely in a passenger train? Aerodynamics? Why not a hood unit?

My wife was visiting our new neighbours yesterday when the subject of older cars came up. She mentioned that we have a 1998 Honda Civic (which has 185,000 km or 115,000 miles on it) and were thinking of buying new snow tires for it. His reply was that we should not spend any more money on it and he strongly advised us to buy either a small new car or slightly used car. He said that he's seen far too many fatal accidents caused by old cars which are still on the road. Usually the engine is still good, but it's something else that's worn out such as the suspension or part of the steering mechanism, etc.

So now I'm wondering if he's right. Our old Honda has been excellent but I'm wondering if I should trade it in for a similar car that's (say) 2-4 years old? Or, maybe I should simply take our Civic into our local garage and have them do a thorough safety inspection of it?

We only put around 15,000 km per year on each car (our mileage is spread out between the two cars). But, when you add it up, we do rack up a fair bit of mileage per year due to frequent drives into the country (visiting family, going on hikes or driving to railway events ).

I have a small area at the end of my yard I would like to detail with MOW and other supplies. There is a pic below. The three tracks on the right are the main, receiving and departure tracks, joining together. The track on the embankment to the left is the yard runaround track. Inbetween are three stub ended tracks, two of which are cut shorter than the one which extends into the pic. The white styrene bit you see between the runaround track and the stub ended yard track will be a service road, it is descending from crossing over that runaround track. So, this is the area available to me.

   

Here is a pic facing the other way. That ramp coming from the crossing can be seen well, and the three stub tracks. The styrene bits next to the longer stub track are to provide a level base for a platform. About where the two shorter stub tracks end, I had started a decline to enhabce the appearance of the embankment. So I've leveled it out here.

   

So my question is: If I was to store 40' lenghts of rail here, would a jib crane be used to load on flatcars? For other supplies a short platform to access a boxcar door? I think I've seen pics of barrels of spikes. They must be incredibly heavy. How are they moved? What else can anyone recommend?

I have a few small structures I started for other scenes but never finished because I changed my mind. I might be able to use them here.

I have room on my trackplan for one more medium sized industry. I want something that could see gondolas come in and out, but Im not sure what. Ive thought about a scrapyard, but that seems almost too generic if that makes sense. My layout is set in the midwest, but what do we have here that uses gondolas?

Jeffrey Wimberly has not posted in some time (Running Bear). Anyone who might have some information that can be made public? He has been silent on his other haunts for about a week or more.
