In the contest forum I mentioned having trouble getting under my layout for maintenance or what ever. Some suggestions were made and I got to thinking about it. Acreeper wouldn't work because of carpet with thick padding. Just kidding. I'm whiling my time away here and am coming cross a number of good ol' fashioned ghost stories about a few hapless brakemen who meet their unfortunate demise while working on the rail road. With Halloween just around the bend, I was wondering who here has some good ol' train ghost stories to tell?

My personal favorite has to be of the one I read about that happened in Vancouver of 1928. It is said that in the CPR yards on Grant Street, an unfortunate brakeman named Hub Clark secured his place in local folklore. It was a dark and stormy night when Mr. Clark slipped and fell on the tracks and knocked himself unconscious. Moments later a passenger train rolled through and decapitated poor Hub. Since then tales abound on rainy nights about a hapless and headless brakeman wearing overalls who can be seen walking about with his lantern, perhaps looking for his head, or perhaps as warning to other to others about the perils of slipping in the mud near the tracks.

...that passenger service is a dead issue? On September 30, 2009, our local NBC affiliate reported there will be daily Amtrack service from Richmond to Washington DC. beginning December 15th. The local newspaper, (well sort of local,) also reported this. There is already an Amtrak from Lynchburg up the Northeast Corridor to Boston. Also, if the Richmond to DC route is successful, it is likely the service will be extended into Roanoke.
On a similar note, 100 years ago the Roanoke Times newspaper announced that the Roanoke Machine Works Shop, (later the Norfolk and Western Railway shops ,) would build "at once four thousand cars and twenty engines." The shops were constructed in 1882 and 1883.

I have some structural blue prints for a CPR Engine House that call for "Cinders 4" thick" on the floor. Am I correct in assuming that this means a gravel or crushed stone floor?

Hi everyone.Finally got my layout up and running and there are not problems pulling cars through switches etc.I did add 1/2oz of weight over the trucks of each box car. I did notice a small issue with a few of the Kadee #158's.A couple of the knuckles are a little stiff and don't close after uncoupling. I checked the springs using a magnifying glass and did not see and paint (from weathering ) stuck anywhere.I did shoot some graphite lubricant into coupler pockets and the springs.Does anyone have any other ideas to keep the knuckles moving loosely?

I'd like to know if an Athearn F7B shell will fit an Athearn F7A frame. Or does Athearn use the same frame for both F7A and F7B?

OK, unlike several other topics discussed here, I don't necessarily want to control a smoke generator from the decoder, I just want to know if smoke generators can be made DCC-compatible... that is, run directly off track power.

I know that the smoke generator is seen by most DCC systems as a dead short because of its' low resistance - but I'm wondering if I put a diode rectifier and resistor in series with it, will it be enough to make it work?

I'm doing an install for a client, and the decoder he's provided me with doesn't seem to have any accessory function outputs (nevermind providing any useful specs for the outputs at all... )... but he'd really like the smoke to work. So I figure if there's a way to run it off track power, that'll make him happier than me having to say it ain't a gonna work atall

I'd like to know the year when Santa Fe started to have bay window cabeese in the red paint scheme with the emblem? Or did they not have bay window cabeese?
