  Big Blue Yahoo Group

We've been getting notices from Yahoo regarding their groups. Basically, what they're saying is that any posts after Dec 14 will be made via email only, and that any post content there will be deleted as of that date. I haven't a clue how that's going to work, but since we've only used our group in case this forum went down, let's just call our Yahoo group as abandon and not even try to use it. We're planning alternate means of communicating anyway, so just hang tight until we get that working.

  I remember this day
Posted by: ezdays - 12-07-2019, 09:21 AM - Forum: Lower Berth - Replies (11)

Not too many of us around that remember this day some 78 years ago. I do remember the president's address on the radio. I was too young to understand then, but I knew something serious happened. Even though, I will never forget that day and those to follow. Every day, the newspaper and the newsreels at the local theater told us of the wars going on in other parts of the world.

I was getting on an elevator the other day and a guy was getting off wearing a, "WWII veteran" hat. I wanted to thank him, but he was gone in a flash. Thanks to him and the thousands of others, we are free to have this venue to discuss trains, modeling and other things. We can travel freely without fear, we have enough to eat and we can work where we choose.

Remember those that gave their all for our freedom, and thank a vet if you have the chance.

  Hot move on the Wilderson.
Posted by: Charlie B - 12-06-2019, 01:42 PM - Forum: Shutterbug area - Replies (24)

I got a phone call late last night from a friend that dispatches for the Wilderson Division.

He told me a special move of some type of experiential GERN product was being shipped to an unknown location. The local would pick the car up from the warehouse on Weber Way.

I got there first thing this morning and the only car spotted at the warehouse was this box car so I was relieved it would not be hard to spot as they worked.
I went down the road to the switch and was just in time to see the conductor cutting off the cabin.

I had a minute to chat and He told me this car was very special and was the hottest move they had ever handled, yet he had no idea what the load was. He did mention it was 3 percent lighter than most loads in this car.

The locomotive backed up the siding passed the brewery and carefully coupled into the box car.

Once the conductor and head end brakeman inspected the car the signal to go ahead was given.

Once clear of the switch they backed up for the coupling to their caboose and after a quick brake test they headed for the interchange track.

I took a few more pictures heading to the interchange including my favorite spot, Morris Trestle.

Once they reached the interchange track they cut of their caboose

and spotted the car.

That completed that movement so they proceeded back uptown to the yard to see if they could make some order and deliver cars that had been delayed because of the move.

After they had departed I walked over and talked to the tower operator. He told me this car was so hot a move that they had ordered the next train “no matter what it is” to stop and pick up that car. There was a lot of future business depending on this move and they want that car to be kept moving.

Within 10 minutes a passing train was flagged and ordered to pick up the car. Boy, was that crew mad, It happened to be an ore train and they had a couple bad cars as well as limited power, but they got the car despite their grumbling.

While they finished up and tied into their caboose I made a dash up the mountain for one last picture of the mysterious car with its secret load.

I am sorry the picture is blurred, I was afraid the cattle train coming up the hill was going to block my shot and I didn't take time to focus properly.

My dispatcher friend has promised to keep me updated on the move. I hope all works well, the railroad needs the business.

  Bowser Challenger kits...
Posted by: doctorwayne - 11-30-2019, 10:55 PM - Forum: Swap Meet - No Replies

A good friend is looking to sell two Bowser Challenger kits, and he's most concerned that they go to someone interested in building and running them, rather than re-selling them for a quick profit.

Here are a few photos...

As is obvious from the photos, there's only one tender, and it's not a centipede-type, but rather a semi-Vanderbilt.

Also, it's my opinion that the extra details shown in the second photo do not all belong with that locomotive, and I would inspect what's there more closely, then redistribute them between the two locomotives.

The seller is aware that without the original tenders, the price should reflect that, but he has also included a lot of brass detail parts not necessarily normally available with those kits.  He simply contacted Bowser and asked for whatever details might be appropriate for use on their Challenger.  The tab for that was in excess of $100.00.

He'd be interested in offers from folks who would enjoy building and running these locos, and mentioned that if anyone had the Walthers kit (unbuilt) for Red Wing Milling, he would consider it as part of the payment for the loco or locos.
He'll sell them singly, with or without the tender shown, or you can buy the whole shebang - two locos, one tender, and a bunch of extra detail parts.

I should also note that your intentions for the item in which you're interested will influence what he might consider to be an acceptable offer.

If anyone is genuinely interested, please send me a PM with your offer, and perhaps a little info on your plans should you end-up with your bid being accepted.  Shipping will be extra, of course, unless you're within reasonable driving distance from the Niagara Peninsula area, as I'd consider playing delivery boy if you're not too far away.

CNR Mike #3254 is seen working the industrial North End of Leetown. She had just dropped her train on the mainline and backed into a siding to make a lift of loaded boxcars from the American Can Co.There's no time to waste on this switching job as they can't afford to tie up the mainline and the crew hustles to keep on schedule.

2-rail O-scale, 52 Freight Cars of Various Types from Estate Sale
Posted by: railandsail - 11-29-2019, 09:09 AM - Forum: Swap Meet - No Replies

Approx ten years ago I had occasion to purchase a big batch of 2-rail scale freight cars from an estate of a fellow who just loved to build and assemble model railroad cars. I bought them even while I am basically an HO guy. At the time I thought I would take them to my retirement in Thailand where I was thinking of setting up an HO, O, and maybe an On30 layouts over there. Things changed, I moved to St Augustine, FL where I am building a HO layout.

About a year ago I sold off a beautiful O scale steam loco I had bought to pull these cars. Today I got these 5 boxes of freight cars out on my stowage and intend to photo and inventory them tomorrow, then put them up for sale. I intend to sell them cheap, and in groups by the box instead of individually. At this time the boxes have 8, 10, 10, 11, 11, and 3 cars each. Most of those boxes are the size you would find at Staples with multi reams of copy paper in them.

If you have a look at this photo hosting site,....you will find about 7 albums with photos of the individual cars

Pretty inexpensive for nicely detailed vintage Atlas/Roco cars....most are $15 each

On30 scale

It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to sell this marvelous loco. I love the looks of it, but I don't think I will ever build a layout to run it, as I am embarking on a good size HO layout.

Mine is factory pained w/green boiler. Road #453

My price is $550 firm, plus the cost of shipping from FL 32084
