Has anyone tried using art boards for scenic backdrops for layouts? I was at an artstore recently, and was impressed by the strength and how light weight their art boards were. I also recall that they weren't too expensive.

The only problem is getting one that is the right size / dimensions for my layout, which would be 68" long by 8-9" tall. So I'd probably have to buy something and cut it down.

Has anyone else used such art supplies or have other suggestions?

I live in a microcosm of Colorado railroading history, Everywhere I go, I encounter the old grades and structures of the once proud working railroads that served and developed this part of the country.

Right here in Rockvale, we had 28 coal mines within just a few square miles, served by the Sante Fe and the CCI. In the alte 1800's the first oil trains were pulling out of Flornce of a regular basis. Midway between Canon City and Florence in the Phantom Canyon grade of the Florence and Cripple Creek RR, 22 miles with a ruling grade of 4% and a maximum grade of 6% at the Wilbur Loop. Florence and Canon City were served by both the Denver and Rio Grande and the Sante Fe railroads, each striving to take over the commerce and the lucrative route through the Royal Gorge to the mines beyond.

So here is the question that nags at me every time I drive around my area of Colorado.

The F&CC RR had to double head every consist of five cars(maximum) just to reach Cripple Creek, so why didn't the narrow gauge railroads, with their steep grades, turn to the geared locomotives that were available - the Heislers, Shays and Climaxes - that served the timber industries and others so well.

It wasn't speed, because the light rail and tight curves of the NG railroads limited speeds to around 20 - 25 mph, so...? :?:

I have down sized my layout, just need to find some Conrail rolling stock.

I'm in search on a prototype picture of a wooden Swift reefer around 1950 or a bit later. This picture is very close to this picture which I took with my new Swift reefer like this.



The prototype car is an identical class like this Swift reefer, 36 ft, wood sheathed and with steel frame and is pictured standing in front of a ramp or icing platform with some industry in background. Btw. the car number of prototype is 4906 however the prototype picture is a b/w one, of course. The prototype car has also these four large hinges exactly as this model made from ATLAS. The only visible difference on the prototype is the existence of a brake man's stand at the long shaft of hand brake. This is missed here on the model.

I have seen this picture on an Ebay offer some times ago, unfortunately after ending of offer (and I have stored a small copy however I can't show it here or use in publicity). I know also that the seller of picture was Ted Culotta known from the Speedwitch Media however I did not receive an answer on my question, where I can understand his silentness. The searched picture is definitively not to found ba a Google search!
I next time I will add a short description on my website about rebuilding of this model and a second one and love to add prototype pictures and information additionally to my work. And now I would like to find the owner of this prototype picture for asking a cpoy of this picture and for permission of using it on my website. Therefore, the prototype picture is so importantly for me, because the Atlas model is a nearly 100 percent exact copy of this reefer on the picture. And this I would like to show in description on my website.

Maybe that the buyer of this picture is to find here under members in this forum? Or maybe that everyone knows the new owner of this picture?
I would be lucky to receive your hints and ideas how and where to find the owner and his picture. Thank you very much to all!
