Having a hard time gluing down my ballast it seems. I spent a good deal of time getting it to look how I wanted and decided to give it the water/detergent spray and then some glue. The water mix seems to be working fine as far as not messing anything up too much but no matter how much I seem to spray I still get the glue pulling the ballast back onto the rail ties and just generally making a mess. I'm using woodland scenics scenic cement, and when my bottles empty plan on diluting some white glue to use. I'm I not. Spraying enough of my detergent water? Just is a hassle, I spend so much time getting the ballast off of the ties and the glue wants to bring it right back.
I am about to start my first separate H0 scale layout.

First I needed to find a nice place (well, an available space) for it.
It will have to fit into the room I attached a scheme of to this post.
I am not planning to build the layout on the diagonal running wall.
There has to be found a solution for the balcony-door on the upper wall, too.
It is rarely opened, but it still has to be possible.
Because I like steam engines and switching, my choice was fastly made:
New England, Boston & Maine Railroad, harbor scene with fiddle yard, pier action and a car float.
Time frame around 1930-1945. Maybe Portland, Maine or an other larger harbor.
The available space makes it possible to build the layout "along the wall" in J or maybe G shape.
So it should be a shelf layout, not more then 20 inches deep. I plan to use Walthers Shinohara Code 83 track with #8 turnouts.
Although I read some articles and looked at many pictures and track plans, it is quite hard for me to figure out the track plan.
I thought about the action happening in a mid sized or large town´s harbor and I realized, that I don´t really know much about it...
So I think a train would leave the fiddle with cars. Then it would run to the harbor and there should exist some kind of sorting track and a runaround.
Cars need to be picked up and spotted and the car float needs to be switched, too.
After work is done, the return train is build and heads back into the staging.
Correct so far?
Maybe it would be good to build the water front on only two of the three legs and use the third for staging and other Rail-Customers, before the rails turn to the harbor scene.
I have bought several background building kits from Walthers and the pier kit with add-ons, a car float and a tugboat to set the scene,
along with a few smaller kits to be placed between them and in the front of the layout.
Now I am sitting here at my desk and I am really close to going mad about the track plan.
So I thought you guys may have some ideas for me of where to locate the main items (fiddle, pier, car float) to have some reasonable space left for the other track.

I was looking through the Walthers sales flyer this morning and see they have a scale house and scale kit. Two scale house building come with the kit and both look to be pre 1960 and older vintage. I was trying to figure out if scales are still in use in the 1990's + and do they have a scale house and operator or would it be a wireless operation today?
I have several Walthers two bay aggregate hoppers that I stripped awhile ago but some paint was left on the outside on both ends of the cars. It is hard to get anything in there to scrape and I came across a grit blaster I had bought and there was some unknown grit with it. What would be a good medium to use with the blaster that will take paint off but not eat into the plastic?
I'm using Firefox almost exclusively to browse, and a while back I added an add-on called, "DoNotTrackMe". It's purpose is to keep sites from tracking you and according to their we site, they blocked my being tracked over 100,000 times. Yesterday while I was doing some routine stuff here, I got a popup window every time I put the cursor in a certain text box. I was baffled and finally tracked it down to this add-on. They changed the name of the add-on to "Blur" and now I think their purpose is blurred as well. I disabled the add-on and the popups went away.
If you are using this add-on in Firefox or another browser, be warned that these popups are a result of that and are not authorized by us and we have no control over them. I have no idea where else these popups will occur, here or on other sites, but I don't like them so I've disabled this add-on in my browser. The trade-off is not worth it.
Let us know if any of you run into the same thing. If you are using this add-on, I recommend you disable it as I did, In the meantime, this is what I'm talking about:
While posting a thread,I noticed some words are blue in color almost the same as the blue used on the forum.
What's up with that and is there a way to change them back to white?
