When a railroad laid it's rail with I believe 39' sections how were curves constructed? Was the rail bent to form an arch or was straight rail used but laid slightly off the
straight to form an arch?

I had a fairly upsetting experience recently with one of my Bachmann Spectrum locomotives. I had a pair of E33 rectifiers running a short freight around the club layout, when one of the engines just quit and died right there.

This engine I've never played with anything apart from putting a decoder in the top hatch. I thought maybe the decoder fried, (and it looks like it did), but I found that even on DC, the engine didn't run properly, especially in reverse.

Not only was the decoder down, but the motor and the PC board were fried. When run in "reverse", the motor will not turn at all (or if it does, it will jolt briefly and die), and even with the motor cut out from the engine, the rear headlight does all sorts of crazy things when I advance the DC throttle.

This tells me something died in the engine and took my decoders with it (I made the mistake of trying a new decoder, which destroyed that one as well).

The decoders now malfunction when going in reverse, eventually shorting out when in reverse, even in a healthy engine.

Why would this happen? I can't find any burn marks or issues on the decoder or PC board, but something isn't right.


It will cost me at least $34 in parts to repair, plus shipping and the cost of shipping my burned out TCS decoders for warranty replacement. Its making me just a tad angry.

Rather than get to upset, I wish I had some insight as to what happened so I can avoid it in the future.

well I've come to a bit of a crossroads while building up my new layout. With the benchwork well underway, and the Helix painted up, I've come to an abrupt halt getting ready to lay track. I'm uncertain as to what track to use. I've been a user of Shinohara for quite a few years, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe Peco is better. I'm looking to start an all out head to head pro's and con's to the use of each product.

For instance, PRO - Shinohara is cheaper than Peco, CON - The availability of Shinohara can be a nightmare at times.

Here is where I need your guys' input. Do you think Shinohara or Peco is better - AND WHY? Your reasoning for which product to use is the biggest key to my decision that I will be making. So please have a good reason as to why you do or don't like a product.

Here is what I need...
I'm specifically looking at using HO Scale, code 83. I will be needing ALOT of #4, 5, and 6 turnouts. I would also prefer to be able to have a switch that can accomadate working ground throws, and it must be DCC friendly.

I've got alot of track right now, but I need ALOT more. I've read over a few posts and topics about Peco and Shinohara, so I know alot of you modeler's out their have used Peco and Shinohara in the past, and may be even using it now. So please, jump on the band wagon and let me know your thoughts. Thanks

I bet this would be right at hoMe on a 2 FOOT Gauge rail line or as a model .

Saw this in front of my house this AM. They were going to a funeral at the church a block south of me.



They brought the horses and the hearse down from Traverse City to Grand Rapids to lead the procession to the cemetery.

I found the plans for this corn crib in an old Model Railroad Craftsman, so I thought I would build it for my abandoned farm scene. I have the eight wall frames built and starting to add the cover boards. This will take awhile.

I've just read about this game and find the description interesting . I'm not a multi-player guy , so would possibly look into it for PS3 .

I'm hoping someone on the Big Blue can help me out with the Tropicana Juice reefers. I know CSX runs a dedicated juice train from Flordia to New Jersey but do the reefers fan out to other destinations in single cars or blocks?
